YES! YEA! Days at The Science Factory

We call them YES! YEA! Days because these one-day camps are “Young Escapades in Science” (YES!) and “Young Escapades in the Arts” (YEA!).

Held on several “no school” days throughout the year, these fun-packed days are held at The Science Factory in Eugene.  Kids in grades 1-5 can engage their artistic and scientific sides while exploring stories and scientific hands-on activities. Curiosity and imagination rule on YES! YEA! Days!

Camp 8:30 am – 4:00 pm, After care 4:00 pm – 5:30 pm
Pre-registration required. $40 per session, $35 for Science Factory or YWA members. After care is an additional $10 per child.
DISCOUNT: Receive a $10 discount for every 3rd program your child attends.
The Science Factory is located at 2300 Leo Harris Parkway (South of Autzen Stadium in Alton Baker Park).

Monday, January 19, 2009: Animals and Habitats
Inspired by a Japanese folktale, fold paper into creatures and create their paper habitats. Go on a scavanger hunt to find live animals around The Science Factory. Explore with friends and share your discoveries.

Friday, January 30: Crime Detective
Create a mock crime scene and take fingerprints. Discuss stories to solve with a friend. Work solo and in teams to puzzle-out evidence bags and hum a tune or two to sleuth by.

Monday, February 2: Have a Heart
A folktale inspires a day of celebrating friendship. You and your friends experiment with pumps and beats in science and in music; create friendship and valentine art. Don’t forget to write a message!

Monday, February 16: Oregon’s 150th Birthday
Hear a pioneer tale, form a clay village with friends and experiment with volcanic rock. See how your volcano impacts the environment you create with friends.

Friday, March 6: Dragons and Bridges
Start with a tale involving a dragon and a bridge. Make dragon puppets with moveable wings. Write dragon words. Make a bridge. Which one of you or your friends will create the longest bridge that can hold the most weight?

Monday, March 30: Tricksters
Hear a trickster tale, and do science that looks like magic. Find out about Hat-Shaking and, with April Fool’s Day around the corner, April Fools’ art.

Friday, April 10: Imaginary Beasts
Wild tales, and strange creatures… Try your oddest! How would this creature need to adapt to live at The Science Factory? In your kitchen? At the airport? Work solo and in teams to develop creatures and environments that are out of this world!

Friday, June 12: Latin Culture Day
The ancient Mayans had cool calendars with pictures that told stories. What pictoral language pictures would you use on your calendar?  Why is a day a day and a year a year on a calendar? Use multi-lingual word play throughout the day as you and your friends enjoy songs, stories, science experiments and art-making together.
